Mother Tragically Passed Away as a Result of Delayed Kidney Stone Extraction and Premature Discharge

Jaehyun Oh obtained a substantial settlement on behalf of a 71-year-old mother who tragically passed away due to her hospital’s failure to treat an acute case of kidney stones in both kidneys. Our client was prematurely discharged by the hospital during her first visit, and her condition significantly deteriorated by the time she returned a week later. She sadly passed away as a result of complications from her kidney stones.

Our client initially presented to the hospital with alarming symptoms of kidney stones, including severe swelling and cellulitis in both of her legs, skin redness, and a urinary tract infection. She was diagnosed with kidney stones in both kidneys, and it was also determined that she was suffering from life-threatening fluid buildup in her kidneys as a result of the kidney stones. Given the time-sensitive nature of our client’s condition, she required an immediate kidney stone extraction and urine drainage to prevent further complications from occurring.  

Although the medical records indicate that both procedures were ordered, the hospital recklessly canceled both treatments without justification or follow-up. Following the cancellation of both treatments, our client was then prematurely discharged by the hospital and instructed to return to her home, also without further instructions or follow-up.

Our client’s condition rapidly deteriorated while at home. Within a week of being discharged, she returned to the hospital and was immediately diagnosed with sepsis, which was a direct result of the hospital’s failure to treat our client’s kidney stones during her first admission. The following day, our client tragically suffered from cardiac arrest and passed away.
