Our client, a 23-year-old woman, went to a Brooklyn emergency room after a night of severe abdominal pain and vomiting. Lab results within hours of her arrival pointed clearly to pancreatitis triggered by diabetic ketoacidosis — a life-threatening condition requiring immediate insulin and fluids. Hospital staff treated her pancreatitis but failed to address the underlying diabetic emergency, and for 12 hours she received no insulin at all.
By the time treatment began, the wrong type of insulin was administered. Her condition deteriorated rapidly; she went into shock and passed away two and a half weeks after she first sought care.
