As the years since 9/11 have come and gone, additional insidious consequences have come to light. What Is the September 11th Victims Compensation Fund?

The September 11th Victims Compensation Fund (also called the Zadroga Fund) is a fund set up by the United States government to help individuals who are ill as a result of their exposure to the toxic dust and the debris from the World Trade Center. The Fund pays for the medical care of the ill person.

The full name of the law is: The Never Forget the Heroes: James Zadroga, Ray Pfeifer, and Luis Alvarez Permanent Authorization of the September 11th Victim Compensation Fund.

What Illnesses Were Caused by 9/11?

People who worked or lived near the World Trade Center, or downtown Manhattan, have been diagnosed with many different illnesses as a result of breathing in the toxic dust and compromised air near the WTC crash site.

Lung Conditions Caused by 9/11

Many individuals who lived or worked near the World Trade Center have developed asthma, COPD, mesothelioma, and other breathing problems. Pulmonary function has also been compromised in a number of people.

Incidents of sarcoidosis, which is a form of inflammation of the lungs, is also very common. In addition, thousands of individuals have developed interstitial lung disease, asbestosis, chronic sinusitis, chronic rhinitis, GERD, and sleep apnea.

Cancer Related to 9/11

9/11 Victims Compensation Fund Eligibility

Anyone who was near the World Trade Center on or after 9/11 and has developed cancer or another disease that is related to the toxic air or debris is entitled to ask for help from the Fund.

These individuals include first and second responders who worked at the World Trade Center as rescue workers, helping victims and cleaning up the debris. Policemen, firefighters (FDNY and other companies), Port Authority personnel, government workers, construction workers, trash removal workers, doctors, nurses, and other volunteers are thought of as First and Second Responders.

You may also be entitled to compensation under the Zadroga Act If you lived or worked within the downtown area during 9/11 and its aftermath. Many office workers have suffered significant personal and physical injuries as a result of their employment near the Twin Towers site.

Three Important Steps to Obtain Compensation Under the Victims’ Compensation Act

1. You will have to prove that you were in the exposure zone, near downtown at the time of the events of 9/11 or its aftermath. Do you have any paperwork that might show that you worked or lived there on or after 9/11? Business records, leases, contracts, photographs, and other types of documents are all acceptable forms of proof.

2. You will have to show that you have a condition related to 9/11. Respiratory illness, cancer, mesothelioma, and a host of other conditions are prevalent in those who have become ill since being exposed to the toxic air around the WTC site. You will need to obtain medical records showing that you have a condition.
