Electric moped sharing startup Revel is expanding rapidly in New York City. Like Citibikes, the mopeds can be rented from stations all over Brooklyn and Queens with just a credit card. Drivers are not required to have any previous moped experience and just need a valid driver's license. The mopeds can go up to 30 miles per hour. Not surprisingly, we are already seeing reports of accidents happening with these sporty E-scooters.

A Revel accident occurred in Washington, DC, when a rider hit a pothole and flipped his scooter over and broke his collarbone. D.C.'s first Revel moped crash was reported Sunday. The rider hit a pothole and fell offWashington Post, August 20, 2019. In addition, the New York Times reported a case where a Revel rider rear-ended a bicycle rider and caused a serious accident. Now Crowding New York's Streets: Rented Mopeds Going 30 M.P.H, NYT, August 9, 2019.

We anticipate that accidents involving e-scooters will be similar to those we see with bicycles:

·     Cars/trucks/bicycles and mopeds crashing;

·     Pedestrians harmed by e-scooter riders;

·     Untrained or impaired riders falling off of their e-scooters;

·     Car doors opening and hitting moped riders; and

·     Mopeds are hitting potholes or other road hazards.
