Medical Malpractice Suits Improve Quality of Patient Care

A landmark report issued in 1999 by the Institute of Medicine, an independent group that advises the Government on health related matters found that medical mistakes caused as many as 98,000 patient deaths a year and more than one million injuries a year in the United States.  Although this study exposes a very wide array of troubling and daunting concerns for the medical community as a whole, these statistics have been shown most recently to be significantly reduced by one major metropolitan hospital through the implementation of patient safety measures.  Specifically, Hospital Executives at New York Presbyterian Hospital-Weill Cornell Medical Center, determined to reduce their medical liability exposure, implemented a comprehensive safety program including enhanced communications among the staff, improved medical record charting, standardized staffing requirements, proper training and supervision and control of medication usage.

This comprehensive safety program reduced yearly obstetric-related malpractice payments by 99%, reduced obstetric liability payments by $25 Million Dollars per year and eliminated maternal deaths and baby injuries during labor and delivery. (Grunebaum, et al, “Effect of a comprehensive obstetric patient safety program on compensation payments and sentinel events,” Amer. J. of Obstetrics & Gynecology, Feb 2011 at 97.)

The study clearly demonstrates that one of the significant benefits of medical liability lawsuits is that it acts as a deterrent and may indeed lead to an increase in the quality of patient care if the lessons are learned and acted upon by physicians, nurses, hospital administrators and medical personnel.

The Jacob Fuchsberg Law Firm insists upon making a difference and improving patient care. If there is a case of medical malpractice we stand ready and able to help you hold the responsible parties accountable and obtain all of the compensation you are entitled to for your loss.
